A Pop-up Stadium Wi-Fi Network for the Largest Local Event of the Year!

I thought I would take a second to write about a project I recently completed. It was fun and spur of the moment, and knowing how to properly use the gear that I had on hand was key to making it work.

The City I live in hosts the "largest illuminated holiday parade in Texas" or at least that's it's claim to fame. Imagine the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade, scaled down a bit, and travelling the streets of South Texas. People really do come from all across our area to check this out and it has quickly become a component of a larger holiday event for our City. This year, they went over the top and booked a concert with a pretty recognizable name and put on one heck of a production.

The only thing missing? Wi-Fi.

I got the call on Wednesday to setup the network for the crews and staff by Saturday morning. I had access to every part of the facility, the City IT department at my side and some great gear ready to be used.

Here's the situation

Fiber optic access to the network on the South Side of the stadium, where the ticket offices are (on the far right hand side of the photo below), needed to be used throughout the area. At the opposite end-zone on the other side of the field (the far left hand side of the photo) there was going to be a monstrosity of a stage.

Using the high-point of the stadium, the pressbox on the West side (where the pic above was taken), here's what I did:

A point-to-point link using Cambium Networks ePMP integrated units. With MCS15 negotiated in the middle of the 5GHz spectrum (5675MHz), we were pushing about 148mbps down and 135mbps up.

That tied me into the network at a great speed and allowed me to setup shop in one of the media rooms. I had a Ruckus Wireless ZoneDirector 3000 connected to a FortiNet Fortigate 90D to provide local routing, switching, firewall, UTM, DHCP, and DNS forwarding. With 16 ports on it, it would be plenty.

From there, it was all about the mesh.
I used 4 Ruckus Wireless T300 APs. The first was connected into the back of my Fortigate as a root hub for the other APs. The other 3 were placed throughout the stadium where Wi-Fi was needed.

The stage AP acted as an access location as well as a mesh node for the two other areas to provide redundancy across the network. In addition, we had a request to provide access to an Arecont 180 degree camera on the stage. I used the Ethernet port on the Network side of the POE injector to do this. Sidenote: it ended up consuming about 10 Mbps on the mesh, but the network handled it with no problems.

Prior to the production trailers coming in, I needed to verify throughput at distance to make sure everything was going to work well:

One other (non-pictured) AP was placed at the far South end of the stadium to provide more access as well as redundancy for the network. The stage & backstage areas both had 2 or 3 paths back to the root for reliability.

Configuring the Gear

Once the APs were in place, the backhaul was working, and the gear was ready, next came the config. Nothing too crazy was done, but I did take some specific steps to ensure reliability of the network. I knew there were going to be more than a handful of devices competing for the spectrum, so I wanted to make sure I was providing the best access possible.

With news coverage from every local station (only about 6 of em to be honest, however each had their own wireless network and 5 cameras or so), press swarming the event, production equipment for mics, monitors, video, and more, RF was going to be a limited commodity.

I took the channel size down to 20 MHz on 2.4 and 5GHz to avoid as much interference as I could. I set the data rates to minimums of MCS 5 or above to block out weak device signals on devices that were a little further away than necessary. I disabled background scanning, load balancing, rogue AP detection, etc. Basically all the things that would eat up the cycles on the AP for no good reason. I wasn't expecting a high number of users (maybe 50 max) but I was anticipating about 10,000 attendees with devices that would be beaconing, probing, etc.

"We want a hidden network"

Originally a hidden SSID was requested, however I opted not to do that for stability. A standard best practice where there are hundreds if not thousands of devices present, hidden SSIDs can be way worse for your network than a strangely named, secured network; for example, "339" (the calendar date of the event). Just in case, lemme try and explain why:

For every beacon that is sent out, the device (an Android device for example) might want to connect to said "hidden" network. If that device does in fact try to connect, a probe request is sent because that SSID is not included in the beacon. Now what you have is an access point not just processing beacons, but probe requests as well. So if you don't want your APs to work double-time, don't use hidden SSIDs. And if you're expecting 10k users, all of which will be beaconing and some probing, it could bring your AP to it's knees pretty quickly.

Ok, showtime.

The network was up, the Wi-Fi was working, now all we needed were thousands of unauthorized users and a few dozen actual users.

Everything worked the way it was supposed to and handled all requests without fail. The network was stable and well performing with the only outage occurring on a node where someone unplugged me for about 20 seconds.

I snapped this shot to show how many individuals there were with a mobile device. Some people took a few photos, others recorded almost the whole concert it seemed!

All in all it was a terrific event for our City and the surrounding communities. I am always happy to do projects like this that elevate our entire area and am so proud that I am the one who gets the call when someone needs wireless and they need it done right!

The Importance of Location in Wi-Fi. Wireless Field Day 8 at Cisco, Zebra, Aruba, and Levi's Stadium!

As the second day of wireless field day began, we were all eager to find out what we would learn from 3 of the top Wi-Fi vendors in the world. After meeting with Ruckus and seeing their emphasis on moving control and administrative platforms to the cloud to facilitate mobility from a larger perspective, I wondered what the other big 3 were up to. How would they be increasing the ease of use of mobile connectivity and what would they be doing with it?

The heavy hitters we had lined up for the day were Cisco, Zebra, and finally Aruba. While there are many manufacturers out there, these 3 and Ruckus have spent the last 5 years shuffling spots with each other jockeying for those top positions.

With Ruckus having introduced the first 802.11ac wave 2 product to the marketplace, their presentation the day before didn't necessarily focus on that, however the other guys are now getting their gear to market so I expected to see some of that hardware make its way into the sessions.

A Visit to Cisco Systems

Cisco started off by not only introducing their ac wave 2 product, but going deeper to show off what they were doing with Mobility Express. Their new platform for getting customers up and running quickly and easily showed its simplicity with a live demo of their hardware and software platforms. In less than a handful of minutes a new ap was powered up, and here's where the fun started.

It looked across its wired interface for a traditional expensive wireless controller, and when it failed to find one, it became its on controller. I'm gonna pause right here because that in and of itself is pretty fantastic. It shows that Cisco is moving to the model of getting their networks up quickly and easily without having to implement a ton of infrastructure to support a simple install. With a deep breath of fresh air, this was a moment. Thanks for reveling in that with me. Oh but wait, there's more. It turns out that as an independent controller this device now had the capability to support up to 25 other Cisco APs. Not just their ME line either, all Cisco APs.

For a small business, a branch office, or somewhere that is around 150 users, this is incredible. The icing on the cake? It's included in the cost of the ap. The two models this is supported on are the 1850 & the 1830 ap. 3x3:3 and 2x2:2 respectively both using 802.11ac wave 2.

With an intro like that, we knew our day was off to a great start. The main idea here is that Cisco is taking a stance to make mobile communications easier to implement, connect to, and manage.

Following that presentation we dug deeper into an application of the wireless network: location. Now that it was easier than ever to get a Cisco wireless network up and running, let's see what we can do with it.

Darryl stepped out with a transparent new version of the hypermobility module to run us through what new features Cisco was implementing to make tracking the locations of devices easier. Fastlocate, presence, and location were the techniques used.

But why? Why is knowing where devices are important? Aside from the analytics and heat mapping components is an underlying reason: to deliver better service. If the network knows where you are, it knows what to connect you to, how to connect to, and when to connect you. Along the theme of true mobility, we are now seeing the first glimpse into a huge component of offering future network services: location.

If the network is aware of where you are and where you are going it is able to offer you a better experience. While at the moment that might mean getting you on the right access point, it's not a far cry to think that it could direct you to a different service, frequency, or even technology. It could even help you speed up how you connect to different severs and services for critical applications or plain old video streams.

Location awareness overshadowed by looking at it as the eye candy that is location analytics, finally got its case proven, at least to me, by Cisco. Well done!

To wrap the Cisco block we went over a few Meraki items that I am not entirely sure what were.  I think it was Sentry, which had something to do with MDM, not really sure what MDM is though.

I don't necessarily have anything against Meraki, I'm just not a user. As such there was really no intro as to what it was for us non-initiated. For those of you that know about the MDM and what not, I'd encourage you to watch the video recap:

I've known about the product for quite sometime and even followed it's pre-Cisco rise through the market. Once a Cisco rep started trying to tell me that I should deploy them 1 per classroom across an entire school, I really kinda tuned em out. As the presenter mentioned yesterday, 2,000 locations, 1 per location, as a great use case (& one I can totally agree with), I really think that's where that group should stay focused. That's just me though. Not trying to hate at all, so please don't take it that way. Rather, inform me and make me a better customer :)

Please note: the presenter was quite put together, had a bad ass hat on, and was very well versed in his product and I can always appreciate some great effort.

Zebra and the Home of Wi-Fi!

We packed up out gear, rolled up our fancy blue XLR cables, and headed down to the Symbol Motorola Zebra campus.

I have a great respect for that campus. Some of my first official Wi-Fi training took place there when the Moto paint was still on the wall and all the equipment still had the Symbol logo on it. Fast forward to our visit and the Zebra logo was just about dry and the batwing emblazoned gear was hanging from the ceiling.

The home of Wi-Fi. Symbol San Jose. Such history in that place. So, what did they have in-store for us? Well a bit of history.

They showed off an extremely well polished, deeply impactful, and totally comprehensive solution of a back-end system that did just about everything everyone else was trying to do, and yes they were moving it all into the cloud. Save hyperlocation, the ability to spin ap's into controllers, cloud manage them, integrate 802.11ac components, retail analytics, etc. it was all there. More importantly it had been there.

With the introduction of the RFS-6000 and WiNG overall a handful of years ago, these devices have been making quick work of processing ap data and giving operators the ability to work with it for quite sometime. That AirDefense acquisition all those years ago was behind a bunch of it, but the true power is in WiNG and the integration with MPact and NSight. NSight shows you what your network is doing, how it's doing it, and why it's doing it. MPact gives you location awareness across your network using both Wi-Fi and BLE in a single console.

So is Hyperlocation really needed by an AP manufacturer? Well it depends. With nothing on the horizon for LTE-U and other technologies, and no hints to move on to anything other than being fantastic at Wi-Fi, it's a tough call. It didn't seem like Zebra was necessarily focused on a mobility play, more of a perfect Wi-Fi play, but I could be wrong. That's not to say that Wi-Fi alone can't benefit from 1 meter location awareness, but it just depends on what the goal of the customer is I suppose.

Does their tech work? Well, they weren't quick to drop names, but 50,000 APs across 40 locations at Caesars Entertainment did come up.

As true pioneers in Wi-Fi, these guys are always a step ahead. When one of the delegates said "I hope it's not the same presentation as the last time with new logos on it" we agreed. And it wasn't. However, it could've been, and everyone else in the industry would still just be catching up.

Next was a field trip to a surprise location. 

We loaded in the limo with our trusty Ramon at the helm and headed North. We exited on Great American Parkway (which I usually associate with a quick stop at In and Out before heading back to Texas) but this time we kept going.

As  we rolled up towards the entrance of the parking lot, Stephen Foskett announced where we were headed and what we were doing: A behind the scenes look at one of Aruba's showcase networks: The Wi-Fi at Levi's and as such the Wi-Fi network for Super Bowl 50.

After a handful of selfies by just about everyone in the crowd we were ushered up to the 6th floor of the SAP tower to the Aruba suite to get a bird's eye-view of what we'd be walking around that afternoon. What a site!

We moved into the board room to kick off two sessions by Aruba: one by Kiyo Kubo, the founder of Meridian, and the second by Chuck Lukaszewski, the man responsible for Large Public Venue deployments for Aruba.

The first presentation dealt with designing apps in Meridian using location based services, specifically the Aruba iBeacon product. To say that it made it seem simple is an understatement; drag this here, drop this there, apply an action, etc. Kiyo showed off a number of ways to work with iBeacons and how their technology can give you fascinating insight into everything from where the closest beer stand is in the stadium (and how to get there), to finding out what the most appropriate time to use the restroom at the office is based on average amount of time spent in there, per hour.

The overall picture was that iBeacon technology doesn't have to be difficult to use, understand, or design for, at least not from Aruba's perspective. I honestly am pretty excited to get started designing solutions with this not because of how easy it is, but because that ease of use gives me the ability to focus on a much larger solution while not having to worry about a huge learning curve to give my customers something amazing.

Our next presentation is one of the few that didn't really fit into the overall theme of mobility, but it spoke directly to our group as wireless professional. Chuck gave us a break down of the elements of designing and engineering a network for large public venues. This is a space that Aruba has paid special attention to and has pretty good success. By defining a specific LPV team to oversee their deployments in these scenarios, Aruba has set a goal to ensure that each one of these implementations is done so with with a rigorous amount of attention to detail, experience, and execution.

As he walked through the slides we got some fantastic tips and lessons learned that can be applied to any type of integration where large numbers of people are expected to visit an have access. From deployment techniques to something as simple as DHCP, this peek into their showcase deployment was fantastic. To kick it up a couple of rungs on the ladder, he even put his desktop up on the main screen and dug into the CLI of the controllers to show us log files, errors, DFS checks and more. As far as infrastructure goes the numbers were astounding: a huge amount of APs deployed, 4 sets of controllers, 40Gbps fiber fed to multiple cores on the network to handle their traffic load, dual redundant multi-gig connections to the internet, and from the looks of it, enough switching horsepower to move $8 million dollars worth of transaction per game-day with little effort.

If you layer on to this what they are doing with beacons and the meridian architecture, it's absolutely incredible. You can bring the app up in your seat, get walking directions to each of the restaurants, bars, and shops in the stadium, figure out which to get to based on wait time, order in-seat ad have it delivered to you, or get instantaneous deals delivered to you based on location.

The use of hyperlocation in this venue is unlike anything I have seen before outside of a tradeshow. To know that each and every one of the 60,000 capacity venue has access to this every gameday and at every event, and to know that it is actually working, is astonishing.

What we didn't go over was the ability to deliver services, deterministic network procedures, loading, and advanced hand-off via hyperlocation. I'm sure there is some thought in there, but we jsut didn't touch it at all.

With the size of the JMA DAS/Small Cell deployment at Levi's Stadium (it was incredible to see SO many antennas in place there for LTE) I'm sure there is a need for it, but without some vendor to vendor interaction, I don't see if going down at Levi's first.

It's all about that base station. WFD8, Day 1

If there is one theme that could sum up the first day of Wireless Field Day 8 for me, I think it has to do with nontraditional connectivity. We focus so much on wireless services and wireless communication, which for the most part now seems to be a given. Everyone knows that you can get your data and connectivity delivered to you wirelessly, wherever you are, whenever you are, and however you want it. That seems to lend itself to this being a truly mobile world and showing us the power of not just wireless communications, but true mobility overall.

Introducing Cambium Networks

We started the day talking with Cambium Networks and getting a fantastic presentation of what their products could do to connect us to the world without wires or any traditional infrastructure. From high-speed point to point links, to cost effective point to multipoint solutions using their ePMP line, the entire wireless broadband eco-system was on display for us. We saw how we could have a single pane of glass to manage network infrastructure from top to bottom and build a completely wireless environment, all the way down to a wireless client device.

That type of connectivity allows us to be a truly mobile society, taking our digital lives with us wherever we choose to be. We're no longer tethered to any traditional form of communication. The products and services that are offered by Cambium give us that capability as users, and as operators the show us a fantastic way to manage it all so that we can embrace the way we communicate, without having to cobble together ways to ensure that it works.

It's a pretty exciting thing to see something like this technology, which I have been following for years, through the eyes of someone who's just getting to see it for the first time. I guess I take for granted the ability to get wireless whenever you want, wherever you want on a platform that just works. I remember a time not too long ago when it didn't all magically just work.
The other delegates sitting around the table don't have to put up with something that's half-baked or that is getting into the spotlight for the first time. It's a technology that has been deployed with some pretty hefty numbers to back it up and all at a price point that is insanely low compared to where it all fist started.

The Cradle Point

For the second act of the day we had an amazing presentation by Cradlepoint which really drove home the thought that disparate networks mean more than just finding a way to get your data to the cloud. From highly sensitive data traversing a separate network provided by a separate solution provider, to being able to open a pop up shop at the blink of an eye using LTE, their devices tie the world together at any point in time and at almost at any location. Obviously in order to take advantage of their hardware and solutions you needed a thick data plan, but with $35 unlimited service for public safety offered by some carriers, as well as the price drops making their way around the industry for unlimited 4G, I don't see that being an issue for much longer.

When you couple this with the fact that all of their gear is cloud managed and accessible to network admins from just about anywhere, it makes for a feature set that lends itself to easily on-boarding clients and getting them connected in the easiest way possible.

Having the right technology to allow you and your customers the ability to tap into this mobile world means the difference between them embracing new technology providing a seamless way to connect, versus having to work within the limitations of the traditional environment. The products that Cradlepoint put on display showed a GUI that was built for people who don't want any nerd knobs to turn, but are more interested in a solution that just works. 

With integrated or modular GPS, the ability to support 3G/4G/WiFi, a ruggedized version for vehicles, and all combined with a highly secure and thorough solution (which even offers some high-security Cloud-to-Cloud functionality through ZScaler) the Cradlepoint package seems to absolutely own the space their in. 

Causing a Ruckus in the Wireless Industry

We ended the day today at Ruckus Wireless. I was fully ready to lob questions at them about new protocols, 802.11ax, location service integration, and drill them on their roadmap. What we got instead was a breath of fresh air.

We started with a live demonstration of MU-MIMO on the r710 802.11ac Wave 2 platform (complete with humbling data rates that were lower than anticipated due to the 700 SSIDs that we saw from their adjacent R&D lab.)

While not too close to the 2.4x data rates seen on their bench, with Ixia Chariot fired up live and pumping data to 2 laptop clients, we saw a 40% increase in capacity just by enabling MU-MIMO on the basestation.

As mentioned by the presenter, you can't just flip any switch on an existing AP and see that kind of performance increase. It was pretty awesome.

What followed was an in-depth explanation of how they're moving all of their software into distributed formats across multiple virtualization techniques. Throughout the presentation it was obvious that the moves being made by Ruckus were to embrace distributed architecture while offering next-generation services. These were not moves aimed at small and medium sized businesses, there's definitely something larger going on here.

So how'd they wrap up their session? By taking a pretty controversial subject in mobility head-on: LTE in unlicensed spectrum. Again, the overall theme that was being mentioned throughout the day was about mobile connectivity and mobility. Not about Wi-Fi, but about how you can be constantly connected regardless of what standard, protocol, network, or infrastructure that is avaialble.

Through one of the most acronym-filled 30 minutes I have ever experienced, @WifiDave walked us through whats happening in the space, what it means to all of us, and what the industry, or at least Ruckus in this case, is doing about it. We had an in-depth conversation about LAA LTE, LTE-U, LWA, and what their differences and impacts would be.

This wasn't just some deep technical dive into protocols, it was absolutely informative session that shows the true commitment to the industry Ruckus has above and beyond what products they currently offer.

Since we're talking about products... I will say that I was totally peeved as a Ruckus partner that they didn't share one iota of what was discussed on a partner webinar last week. There are so many great things that are about to be released by the company that for them to just not talk about them was a bummer, especially since they're less than a week away from unleashing a few announcements.  Anyhow, I digress.

So, to wrap this up..

Overall, the break away from traditional services that each of the vendors showed us today really drives home the point that it's not necessarily about which technology is in use to get you connected, but getting you connected overall.

Whether it's LTE to Wi-Fi, our world has a huge demand for being constantly available and connected to each other. It's no longer about wired or wireless, it's about connectivity. Wifi or LTE? Those just seem to be the means to an end of true mobility. The mobility I am talking about is not just being able to walk around and use high-speed data wherever you want, but to have the flexibility that comes with not having to rely on someone else or some service to tell you when you can and can't be connected.

Through the vendors that we had the chance to meet with today it was really apparent there is something much bigger going on in this industry than just wireless and Wi-Fi.

I hope we're about to pick up even more about this tomorrow from everyone we meet with at Wireless Field Day 8, day 2!

CTIA 2015: Ericsson's LAA LTE, Screaming Fast PTP Microwave, and Wireless Speakers.

The second day at any show is always better than the first. You have your bearings, you've seen a few people, you hear some buzz, and you know what to look for.

I would say that I am a tradeshow junkie. I  love these things. From a business perspective, a personal perspective, and now from the perspective of trying to figure out how to write-up what I experienced, I have a good time at these events.

Here are some of the things I saw this year that made an impact with me.


Anyone who has ever worked in the field in our industry has likely seen this product: Cable entry solutions that can be custom fit to just about any penetration and provide 4 bar water pressure protection. They're blue, the stand out, they work REALLY well, and most importantly they are really inexpensive.

I got  a walk-through of the products a handful of samples, and brainstormed with the team about some fantastic use cases:, mainly fitting around retrofitting existing cable penetrations.

Here's a scenario:
There are more than a few customers who's installer didn't have the foresight to recognize that the hole they jackhammered through the wall may be used in the future for something else, so they end up just polyurethaning the whole thing. By the time you come around, there aren't too many options to run your cable through that hole without having to push out all that GreatStuff, run your cable, and re-plug the hole, leaving the person behind you in the same situation. With this product, you punch out that dirty filling, provide a cleaner passage for the existing cable without having to cut/break it and provide future expansion. For something around $30 for a traditional circular penetration. Super cool

SIAE Microelecttronica

2 Gbps across licensed 11 GHz in an 80 MHz channel, blasting 4096 QAM, through a single PoE-fed all-outdoor unit with 2 GigE ports, 2 SFP ports, an option for AC power, that is cost-competitive, targeted at dominating the industry, and backed by a team of industry veterans. The ALFOplus2.

That's what I walked into at the Siae booth. And obvsly, the obligatory picture of a Ferrari as the desktop background. Oh, you Italians!

There isn't much more to say about this product than wow. Racked up in the booth at the show were 2 non-descript radios that were fired up, passing traffic, and putting it out there for everyone to see. 
As 2 North American SE's traded out presentations for meeting after meeting with interested onlookers, it was great to see some excitement in the PTP microwave space.

The combination of features, capacity, and capability are spectacular. Once this finishes up the touches on FCC approval in October, there should be a great new radio on the market that fits into the budgets of large and small customers looking to deploy very-high throughput microwave in a licensed and solid 11 GHz band in the US. Can't wait to get my hands on a deployment for this!

The Polaroid Snap

What is have to do with wireless? Nothing. Why am I writing about it? Because Polaroid's are timeless, they have a new innovative product, and it was the most fun booth that I visited at the show.

No matter how many sports cars you park in your booth, how many rented show-babes you hire, or how great your tech is, the one thing that is proven time and time again, is that the people make the booth. Polaroid's two gentlemen at this year's event did that. From tongue-in-cheek sarcastic responses to overall product knowledge and amazing personality, they totally won.

They were mainly there to talk about this little new cube camera, the Polaroid HD Cube Action Cam, and the really cool Zip wireless printer (you can print via wi-fi, bluetooth, or NFC using the app and printer!) but the thing they had stashed behind a sign was the new Polaroid Snap

This camera is the reincarnation of the traditional Polaroid Instant Camera, but now available for the Holiday season. 

Load the paper in the back, snap a photo, and print it out. Fantastic simplicity in a new smaller form factor. Super excited! 

The write-up here does a much better job of the details, but I had to mention this for Polaroid as their staff was awesome!!


Along the lines of awesome consumer products, this year's award winner for "Hot for the Holidays" is something I will definitely be buying. The Sengled Pulse

At a price point of around $150, this product is Bluetooth and soon Wi-Fi controllable LED light that fits into a normal socket, is controlled via an app, and oh yeah, has an integrated JBL speaker!

You screw it into the socket, associate it with the app, use the app to set brightness, power the lights on and off, and even group them, and then: crank up the tunes.

Special mention here to MP Antenna. We were engaged in a great conversation about different use cases for antennas, why multi-polatization matters, what makes a good antenna, and overall nerdery, when Adam decided to hand me these two:

My first question was: where do you put these things? 
The answer: "On things that go fast"

Unfortunately I cannot elaborate on anything as I didn't get more than that, but I am envisioning live video streaming from some of America's favorite motosport dashboards as well as high-speed connectivity in vehicles on streets around the world.

What am I gonna do with em? Slim down my pineapple footprint. :)


As a Google Apps partner and technology consultant, I am always looking for ways to save my customers time and money by pairing up technologies that they are comfortable with, with technology that is easy to use. I stumbled across Switch in the Startup section of CTIA this year.

From the beginnings of a company name GrandCentral which was acquired and turned into Google Voice, to the launch of UberConference (a really cool conferencing on the fly app), Craig Walker has been the man behind making communications collaborative and way easier for all of us. Now, with Switch, the integration of Google Apps and your voice communications are seamless. 

Switch is a new business phone system that provides you with VoIP service for $15 a month. 
They've partnered with ObiHai (makers of an almost cult-classic following for a device that allows you to take your Google Voice number and plug a phone into it) to build a handset, wrap it with some really, really, sleek UI and change the way you think of communications

In my opinion the most important thing that could have been discussed at CTIA this year was about spectrum. I know that sound ridiculous because it is always about spectrum, so let me be specific: the use of unlicensed spectrum to push out a "5G" service called LAA LTE or LTE-U. 

So many articles, so much buzz, and so many viewpoints have been brought up about this that I honestly expected to see a little more on the show floor. There are even rumors of an AP manufacturer who is integrating LAA LTE into their APs, but they didn't even have a presence at the show; which was totally odd. After all the hub-bub and chatter, there was one corner, front and center at the Ericsson booth that took this head-on. And rightfully so.

Ericsson has been at the center of the LAA LTE debate since the beginning, with that big first TMO announcement that shook everyone up.  Google ripped up the tech with what seemed like a missile pointed straight at the carriers, but Ericsson had their customers 6 and didn't flinch. Instead, they chose to not file letters, write scathing white papers and offer their opinion; they showed up at the largest industry event on our continent and put their money where their tech was. Points to the Swedes on this one.

Under the heading "New Innovations for 2015" was this little setup:
2 laptops to control and measure a Realtek Wi-Fi client device connected to a Cisco AP, and an LAA-LTE device connected to one of their small-cell devices support LAA LTE in U-NII 3.

On two monitors about the setup you saw a break down of what was supposed to happen:

Guess what? It seemed to work.
Now, I know that there is a LOT more to this than what is shown on these screens, and granted I was in a vendors booth that is one of the largest industry proponents, however, if this test was 100% legit, which it seemed to be after getting a very good walk through and demonstration from the sales AND Mr. Pekka the tech guy who put this together, I was smiling.

Some quick thoughts from someone who was explaining all this tech to his wife at the show:

The coolest thing about CTIA is that on one side of the show floor you have all of the towers, transmission, cable, and infrastructure gear. While on the other, you have accessories, chargers, cables, apps, devices, and things that make the most of your mobile device. 

Sandwiched in the middle are the mobile device manufactures and carriers. One side of the show feeds the other. Whoever is in charge of the layout of this event totally understands the importance of this eco-system and the symbiosis therein: you can't have one with out the other.

I think this is critical because it's not the infrastructure that drives the market. No one cares who Ericsson is. End-users could care less about which cable type you are using. What they care about is that other side of the show. If the equipment on the right side of the show can't provide what the consumer needs on the left hand side of the show, they will find someone that can.

What does this have to do with LAA LTE? Everything. 

When TMO and the other carriers start talking about what they can do for the end-users service, they are addressing the left hand side of the event, not the right. This is where the bullish attitude of people like Jon Legere come in and say "Fuck it, it better work" makes all the difference. 

LAA LTE is not an option, it is critical. It is going to and will happen, maybe not across every carrier, but there's a pretty good chance of it. Why? Because it's what the left hand side of the show wants, needs, and has to have: speed. capacity. service. 

I was so excited to see Ericsson facing the music on this. It shows that they are determined to get this to market, and again, not because they are pushing for it, but because their customers are, because that's what their subs want.

I love CTIA. What a great show. Well done in 2015 guys. See you next year!
